Human rights lawyer Yu Wensheng, who was jailed for four years for "inciting subversion of state power", was allowed visits for the first time on 14 August 2020, though only with his representing lawyer, Lu Siwei, since his detention in 2018.

Yu’s wife Xu Yan revealed that according to Lu who met Yu in Xuzhou’s detention house, Yu suffered from various ailments and injuries, including toothache and trembling of right hand. Xu criticized relevant authorities for refusing her to visit her husband and depriving his right of letter communication. Xu said that she had already demanded the detention centre to investigate causes for Yu’s injuries, and to accordingly arrange treatment to him. Xu also requested authorities to transfer Yu to Beijing’s detention centre due to the lack of heating facilities in Xuzhou, which may exacerbate Yu’s poor health conditions.
